9 years agoarm64: Emulate SETEND for AArch32 tasks
Suzuki K. Poulose [Wed, 21 Jan 2015 12:43:11 +0000 (12:43 +0000)]
arm64: Emulate SETEND for AArch32 tasks

Emulate deprecated 'setend' instruction for AArch32 bit tasks.

setend [le/be] - Sets the endianness of EL0

On systems with CPUs which support mixed endian at EL0, the hardware
support for the instruction can be enabled by setting the SCTLR_EL1.SED
bit. Like the other emulated instructions it is controlled by an entry in
/proc/sys/abi/. For more information see :
Documentation/arm64/legacy_instructions.txt

The instruction is emulated by setting/clearing the SPSR_EL1.E bit, which
will be reflected in the PSTATE.E in AArch32 context.

This patch also restores the native endianness for the execution of signal
handlers, since the process could have changed the endianness.

Note: All CPUs on the system must have mixed endian support at EL0. Once the
handler is registered, hotplugging a CPU which doesn't support mixed endian,
could lead to unexpected results/behavior in applications.

arm64: Consolidate hotplug notifier for instruction emulation

As of now each insn_emulation has a cpu hotplug notifier that
enables/disables the CPU feature bit for the functionality. This
patch re-arranges the code, such that there is only one notifier
that runs through the list of registered emulation hooks and runs
their corresponding set_hw_mode.

We do nothing when a CPU is dying as we will set the appropriate bits
as it comes back online based on the state of the hooks.

The arm64 dump code is currently relying on some definitions which are
pulled in via transitive dependencies. It seems we have implicit
dependencies on the following definitions:

* MODULES_VADDR         (asm/memory.h)

Mark Rutland [Thu, 22 Jan 2015 18:20:35 +0000 (18:20 +0000)]
arm64: Fix overlapping VA allocations

PCI IO space was intended to be 16MiB, at 32MiB below MODULES_VADDR, but
commit d1e6dc91b532d3d3 ("arm64: Add architectural support for PCI")
extended this to cover the full 32MiB. The final 8KiB of this 32MiB is
also allocated for the fixmap, allowing for potential clashes between
the two.

This change was masked by assumptions in mem_init and the page table
dumping code, which assumed the I/O space to be 16MiB long through
seaparte hard-coded definitions.

This patch changes the definition of the PCI I/O space allocation to
live in asm/memory.h, along with the other VA space allocations. As the
fixmap allocation depends on the number of fixmap entries, this is moved
below the PCI I/O space allocation. Both the fixmap and PCI I/O space
are guarded with 2MB of padding. Sites assuming the I/O space was 16MiB
are moved over use new PCI_IO_{START,END} definitions, which will keep
in sync with the size of the IO space (now restored to 16MiB).

As a useful side effect, the use of the new PCI_IO_{START,END}
definitions prevents a build issue in the dumping code due to a (now
redundant) missing include of io.h for PCI_IOBASE.

arm64: respect mem= for EFI

When booting with EFI, we acquire the EFI memory map after parsing the
early params. This unfortuantely renders the option useless as we call
memblock_enforce_memory_limit (which uses memblock_remove_range behind
the scenes) before we've added any memblocks. We end up removing
nothing, then adding all of memory later when efi_init calls
reserve_regions.

Instead, we can log the limit and apply this later when we do the rest
of the memblock work in memblock_init, which should work regardless of
the presence of EFI. At the same time we may as well move the early
parameter into arm64's mm/init.c, close to arm64_memblock_init.

Any memory which must be mapped (e.g. for use by EFI runtime services)
must be mapped explicitly reather than relying on the linear mapping,

arm64: kill off the libgcc dependency

The arm64 kernel builds fine without the libgcc. Actually it should not
be used at all in the kernel. The following are the reasons indicated
by Russell King:

  Although libgcc is part of the compiler, libgcc is built with the
  expectation that it will be running in userland - it expects to link
  to a libc.  That's why you can't build libgcc without having the glibc

  [...]

  Meanwhile, having the kernel build the compiler support functions that
  it needs ensures that (a) we know what compiler support functions are
  being used, (b) we know the implementation of those support functions
  are sane for use in the kernel, (c) we can build them with appropriate

Mark Rutland [Mon, 24 Nov 2014 12:03:32 +0000 (12:03 +0000)]
arm64: introduce common ESR_ELx_* definitions

Currently we have separate ESR_EL{1,2}_* macros, despite the fact that
the encodings are common. While encodings are architected to refer to
the current EL or a lower EL, the macros refer to particular ELs (e.g.
ESR_ELx_EC_DABT_EL0). Having these duplicate definitions is redundant,
and their naming is misleading.

This patch introduces common ESR_ELx_* macros that can be used in all
cases, in preparation for later patches which will migrate existing
users over. Some additional cleanups are made in the process:

* Suffixes for particular exception levelts (e.g. _EL0, _EL1) are
  replaced with more general _LOW and _CUR suffixes, matching the
  architectural intent.

* ESR_ELx_EC_WFx, rather than ESR_ELx_EC_WFI is introduced, as this
  EC encoding covers traps from both WFE and WFI. Similarly,
  ESR_ELx_WFx_ISS_WFE rather than ESR_ELx_EC_WFI_ISS_WFE is introduced.

* Multi-bit fields are given consistently named _SHIFT and _MASK macros.

* UL() is used for compatiblity with assembly files.

* Comments are added for currently unallocated ESR_ELx.EC encodings.

For fields other than ESR_ELx.EC, macros are only implemented for fields
for which there is already an ESR_EL{1,2}_* macro.

On ARMv8, the cache hierarchy can be identified through Cache Level ID
(CLIDR) register while the cache geometry is provided by Cache Size ID

Since the architecture doesn't provide any way of detecting the cpus

Mark Rutland [Thu, 8 Jan 2015 17:07:47 +0000 (17:07 +0000)]
arm64: remove broken cachepolicy code

The cachepolicy kernel parameter was intended to aid in the debugging of
coherency issues, but it is fundamentally broken for several reasons:

 * On SMP platforms, only the boot CPU's tcr_el1 is altered. Secondary
   CPUs may therefore use differ w.r.t. the attributes they apply to
   MT_NORMAL memory, resulting in a loss of coherency.

 * The cache maintenance using flush_dcache_all (based on Set/Way
   operations) is not guaranteed to empty a given CPU's cache hierarchy
   while said CPU has caches enabled, it cannot empty the caches of
   other coherent PEs, nor is it guaranteed to flush data to the PoC
   even when caches are disabled.

 * The TLBs are not invalidated around the modification of MAIR_EL1 and
   TCR_EL1, as required by the architecture (as both are permitted to be
   cached in a TLB). This may result in CPUs using attributes other than
   those expected for some memory accesses, resulting in a loss of
   coherency.

 * Exclusive accesses are not architecturally guaranteed to function as
   expected on memory marked as Write-Through or Non-Cacheable. Thus
   changing the attributes of MT_NORMAL away from the (architecurally
   safe) defaults may cause uses of these instructions (e.g. atomics) to
   behave erratically.

Given this, the cachepolicy code cannot be used for debugging purposes
as it alone is likely to cause coherency issues. This patch removes the
broken cachepolicy code.

arm64/efi: move SetVirtualAddressMap() to UEFI stub

In order to support kexec, the kernel needs to be able to deal with the
state of the UEFI firmware after SetVirtualAddressMap() has been called.
To avoid having separate code paths for non-kexec and kexec, let's move
the call to SetVirtualAddressMap() to the stub: this will guarantee us
that it will only be called once (since the stub is not executed during
kexec), and ensures that the UEFI state is identical between kexec and
normal boot.

This implies that the layout of the virtual mapping needs to be created
by the stub as well. All regions are rounded up to a naturally aligned
multiple of 64 KB (for compatibility with 64k pages kernels) and recorded

BUG at mm/rmap.c:399!") caused by commit 7a3ef208e662 ("mm: prevent
endless growth of anon_vma hierarchy")

Anon_vma_clone() is usually called for a copy of source vma in
destination argument.  If source vma has anon_vma it should be already
in dst->anon_vma.  NULL in dst->anon_vma is used as a sign that it's
called from anon_vma_fork().  In this case anon_vma_clone() finds
anon_vma for reusing.

Vma_adjust() calls it differently and this breaks anon_vma reusing
logic: anon_vma_clone() links vma to old anon_vma and updates degree
counters but vma_adjust() overrides vma->anon_vma right after that.  As
a result final unlink_anon_vmas() decrements degree for wrong anon_vma.

This patch assigns ->anon_vma before calling anon_vma_clone().

9 years agosched/deadline: Avoid double-accounting in case of missed deadlines
Luca Abeni [Wed, 17 Dec 2014 10:50:32 +0000 (11:50 +0100)]
sched/deadline: Avoid double-accounting in case of missed deadlines

The dl_runtime_exceeded() function is supposed to ckeck if
a SCHED_DEADLINE task must be throttled, by checking if its
current runtime is <= 0. However, it also checks if the
scheduling deadline has been missed (the current time is
larger than the current scheduling deadline), further
decreasing the runtime if this happens.
This "double accounting" is wrong:

- In case of partitioned scheduling (or single CPU), this
  happens if task_tick_dl() has been called later than expected
  (due to small HZ values). In this case, the current runtime is
  also negative, and replenish_dl_entity() can take care of the
  deadline miss by recharging the current runtime to a value smaller
  than dl_runtime

- In case of global scheduling on multiple CPUs, scheduling
  deadlines can be missed even if the task did not consume more
  runtime than expected, hence penalizing the task is wrong

This patch fix this problem by throttling a SCHED_DEADLINE task
only when its runtime becomes negative, and not modifying the runtime

set_task_cpu(next_task, later_rq->cpu);
activate_task(later_rq, next_task, 0);

which ends up calling dequeue_task_dl(), setting the new CPU, and then
calling enqueue_task_dl().

enqueue_task_dl() then calls enqueue_dl_entity(), which calls
update_dl_entity(), which can modify scheduling deadline and runtime,
breaking global EDF scheduling.

As a result, some of the properties of global EDF are not respected:
for example, a taskset {(30, 80), (40, 80), (120, 170)} scheduled on
two cores can have unbounded response times for the third task even
if 30/80+40/80+120/170 = 1.5809 < 2

This can be fixed by invoking update_dl_entity() only in case of
wakeup, or if this is a new SCHED_DEADLINE task.

As per e23738a7300a ("sched, inotify: Deal with nested sleeps").

Vlastimil Babka [Thu, 8 Jan 2015 22:32:40 +0000 (14:32 -0800)]
mm, vmscan: prevent kswapd livelock due to pfmemalloc-throttled process being killed

Charles Shirron and Paul Cassella from Cray Inc have reported kswapd
stuck in a busy loop with nothing left to balance, but
kswapd_try_to_sleep() failing to sleep.  Their analysis found the cause
to be a combination of several factors:

1. A process is waiting in throttle_direct_reclaim() on pgdat->pfmemalloc_wait

2. The process has been killed (by OOM in this case), but has not yet been
   scheduled to remove itself from the waitqueue and die.

3. kswapd checks for throttled processes in prepare_kswapd_sleep():

        if (waitqueue_active(&pgdat->pfmemalloc_wait)) {
                wake_up(&pgdat->pfmemalloc_wait);
return false; // kswapd will not go to sleep
}

   However, for a process that was already killed, wake_up() does not remove
   the process from the waitqueue, since try_to_wake_up() checks its state
   first and returns false when the process is no longer waiting.

4. kswapd is running on the same CPU as the only CPU that the process is
   allowed to run on (through cpus_allowed, or possibly single-cpu system).

5. CONFIG_PREEMPT_NONE=y kernel is used. If there's nothing to balance, kswapd
   encounters no voluntary preemption points and repeatedly fails
   prepare_kswapd_sleep(), blocking the process from running and removing
   itself from the waitqueue, which would let kswapd sleep.

So, the source of the problem is that we prevent kswapd from going to
sleep until there are processes waiting on the pfmemalloc_wait queue,
and a process waiting on a queue is guaranteed to be removed from the
queue only when it gets scheduled.  This was done to make sure that no
process is left sleeping on pfmemalloc_wait when kswapd itself goes to
sleep.

However, it isn't necessary to postpone kswapd sleep until the
pfmemalloc_wait queue actually empties.  To prevent processes from being
left sleeping, it's actually enough to guarantee that all processes
waiting on pfmemalloc_wait queue have been woken up by the time we put
kswapd to sleep.

This patch therefore fixes this issue by substituting 'wake_up' with
'wake_up_all' and removing 'return false' in the code snippet from
prepare_kswapd_sleep() above.  Note that if any process puts itself in
the queue after this waitqueue_active() check, or after the wake up
itself, it means that the process will also wake up kswapd - and since
we are under prepare_to_wait(), the wake up won't be missed.  Also we
update the comment prepare_kswapd_sleep() to hopefully more clearly
describe the races it is preventing.

    if (page->mapping)
      account_page_dirtied(page)
        __inc_zone_page_state(page, NR_FILE_DIRTY);
__inc_bdi_stat(mapping->backing_dev_info, BDI_RECLAIMABLE);

which results in an imbalance of NR_FILE_DIRTY and BDI_RECLAIMABLE.

Dirtiers usually lock out truncation, either by holding the page lock
directly, or in case of zap_pte_range(), by pinning the mapcount with
the page table lock held.  The notable exception to this rule, though,
is do_wp_page(), for which this race exists.  However, do_wp_page()
already waits for a locked page to unlock before setting the dirty bit,
in order to prevent a race where clear_page_dirty() misses the page bit
in the presence of dirty ptes.  Upgrade that wait to a fully locked
set_page_dirty() to also cover the situation explained above.

Afterwards, the code in set_page_dirty() dealing with a truncation race
is no longer needed.  Remove it.

Konstantin Khlebnikov [Thu, 8 Jan 2015 22:32:15 +0000 (14:32 -0800)]
mm: prevent endless growth of anon_vma hierarchy

Constantly forking task causes unlimited grow of anon_vma chain.  Each
next child allocates new level of anon_vmas and links vma to all
previous levels because pages might be inherited from any level.

This patch adds heuristic which decides to reuse existing anon_vma
instead of forking new one.  It adds counter anon_vma->degree which
counts linked vmas and directly descending anon_vmas and reuses anon_vma
if counter is lower than two.  As a result each anon_vma has either vma
or at least two descending anon_vmas.  In such trees half of nodes are
leafs with alive vmas, thus count of anon_vmas is no more than two times
bigger than count of vmas.

This heuristic reuses anon_vmas as few as possible because each reuse
adds false aliasing among vmas and rmap walker ought to scan more ptes
when it searches where page is might be mapped.

Makefile: include arch/*/include/generated/uapi before .../generated

The introduction of the uapi directories in v3.7-rc1 moved some of the
generated headers from arch/*/include/generated to the uapi directory,
keeping the #include directives intact.

This creates a problem when bisecting, because the unversioned files are
not cleaned automatically by git and the compiler might include stale
headers as a result.  Instead of cleaning them in the Makefiles, promote
arch/*/include/generated/uapi in the search path.  Under normal
circumstances, there is no overlap between this uapi subdirectory and
its parent, so the include choices remain the same.  We keep
arch/*/include/generated/uapi in the USERINCLUDE variable so that it is
usable standalone.

Note that we cannot completely swap the order of the uapi and
kernel-only directories, since the headers in include/uapi/asm-generic
are meant to be wrapped by their include/asm-generic counterparts when
building kernel code.

Merge tag 'amdkfd-fixes-2015-01-06' of git://people.freedesktop.org/~gabbayo/linux into drm-fixes

- Complete overhaul to the main IOCTL function, kfd_ioctl(), according to
  drm_ioctl() example. This includes changing the IOCTL definitions, so it
  breaks compatibility with previous versions of the userspace. However,
  because the kernel was not officialy released yet, and this the first
  kernel that includes amdkfd, I assume I can still do that at this stage.

- A couple of bug fixes for the non-HWS path (used for bring-ups and
  debugging purposes only).

* tag 'amdkfd-fixes-2015-01-06' of git://people.freedesktop.org/~gabbayo/linux:
  drm/amdkfd: rewrite kfd_ioctl() according to drm_ioctl()
  drm/amdkfd: reformat IOCTL definitions to drm-style
  drm/amdkfd: Do copy_to/from_user in general kfd_ioctl()

9 years agoARM: 8253/1: mm: use phys_addr_t type in map_lowmem() for kernel mem region
Grygorii Strashko [Tue, 23 Dec 2014 18:36:55 +0000 (19:36 +0100)]
ARM: 8253/1: mm: use phys_addr_t type in map_lowmem() for kernel mem region

Now local variables kernel_x_start and kernel_x_end defined using
'unsigned long' type which is wrong because they represent physical
memory range and will be calculated wrongly if LPAE is enabled.
As result, all following code in map_lowmem() will not work correctly.

For example, Keystone 2 boot is broken because
 kernel_x_start == 0x0000 0000
 kernel_x_end   == 0x0080 0000

instead of
 kernel_x_start == 0x0000 0008 0000 0000
 kernel_x_end   == 0x0000 0008 0080 0000
and as result whole low memory will be mapped with MT_MEMORY_RW
permissions by code (start > kernel_x_end):
} else if (start >= kernel_x_end) {
map.pfn = __phys_to_pfn(start);
map.virtual = __phys_to_virt(start);
map.length = end - start;
map.type = MT_MEMORY_RW;

create_mapping(&map);
}

Hence, fix it by using phys_addr_t type for variables kernel_x_start
and kernel_x_end.

Mark Rutland [Wed, 17 Dec 2014 16:57:38 +0000 (17:57 +0100)]
ARM: 8249/1: mm: dump: don't skip regions

Currently the arm page table dumping code starts dumping page tables
from USER_PGTABLES_CEILING. This is unnecessary for skipping any entries
related to userspace as the swapper_pg_dir does not contain such
entries, and results in a couple of unfortuante side effects.

Firstly, any kernel mappings which might exist below
USER_PGTABLES_CEILING will not be accounted in the dump output. This
masks any entries erroneously created below this address.

Secondly, if the final page table entry walked is part of a valid
mapping the page table dumping code will not log the region this entry
is part of, as the final note_page call in walk_pgd will trigger an
early return when 0 < USER_PGTABLES_CEILING. Luckily this isn't seen on
contemporary systems as they typically don't have enough RAM to extend
the linear mapping right to the end of the address space.

Due to the way addr is constructed in the walk_* functions, it can never
be less than USER_PGTABLES_CEILING when walking the page tables, so it
is not necessary to avoid dereferencing invalid table addresses. The
existing checks for st->current_prot and st->marker[1].start_address are
sufficient to ensure we will not print and/or dereference garbage when
trying to log information.

This patch removes both problematic uses of USER_PGTABLES_CEILING from
the arm page table dumping code, preventing both of these issues. We
will now report any low mappings, and the final note_page call will not
return early, ensuring all regions are logged.
