firewire: addendum to address handler RCU conversion

Follow up on commit 21743cc6cd47 "firewire: remove global lock around
address handlers, convert to RCU":

  - address_handler_lock no longer serializes the address handler, only
its function to serialize updates to the list of handlers remains.
    Rename the lock to address_handler_list_lock.

  - Callers of fw_core_remove_address_handler() must be able to sleep.
Comment on this in the API documentation.

  - The counterpart fw_core_add_address_handler() is by nature something
which is used in process context.  Replace spin_lock_bh() by
    spin_lock() in fw_core_add_address_handler() and in
fw_core_remove_address_handler(), and document that process context
    is now required for fw_core_add_address_handler().

  - Extend the documentation of fw_address_callback_t.

12 years agofirewire: remove global lock around address handlers, convert to RCU
Peter Hurley [Sun, 19 Aug 2012 06:50:02 +0000 (02:50 -0400)]
firewire: remove global lock around address handlers, convert to RCU

Upper-layer handlers for inbound requests were called with a spinlock
held by firewire-core.  Calling into upper layers with a lower layer
lock held is generally a bad idea.

What's more, since commit ea102d0ec475 "firewire: core: convert AR-req
handler lock from _irqsave to _bh", a caller of fw_send_request() i.e.
initiator of outbound request could no longer do that while having
interrupts disabled, if the local node was addressed by that request.

In order to make all this more flexible, convert the management of
address ranges and handlers from a global lock around readers and
writers to RCU (and a remaining global lock for writers).  As a minor
side effect, handling of inbound requests at different cards are now no
longer serialized.  (There is still per-card serialization since
firewire-ohci uses a single DMA tasklet for inbound request events.)

In other words, address handlers are now called in an RCU read-side
critical section instead of from within a spin_lock_bh serialized
section.

mlx4_core: Disable SENSE_PORT for multifunction devices

In the current driver, the SENSE_PORT firmware command is issued as a
"wrapped" command, but the command handling code doesn't have a
wrapper, so it will never do anything other than log an error message.
The latest ConnectX-3 2.11.500 firmware reports the SENSE_PORT
capability even in multi-function (SR-IOV) mode, so the driver will
try to issue the command.

At least until the driver has a proper wrapper for SENSE_PORT, make
sure we disable the command for multi-function devices.

Alan Stern [Wed, 26 Sep 2012 17:09:53 +0000 (13:09 -0400)]
USB: Fix race condition when removing host controllers

This patch (as1607) fixes a race that can occur if a USB host
controller is removed while a process is reading the
/sys/kernel/debug/usb/devices file.

The usb_device_read() routine uses the bus->root_hub pointer to
determine whether or not the root hub is registered.  The is not a
valid test, because the pointer is set before the root hub gets
registered and remains set even after the root hub is unregistered and
deallocated.  As a result, usb_device_read() or usb_device_dump() can
access freed memory, causing an oops.

The patch changes the test to use the hcd->rh_registered flag, which
does get set and cleared at the appropriate times.  It also makes sure
to hold the usb_bus_list_lock mutex while setting the flag, so that
usb_device_read() will become aware of new root hubs as soon as they
are registered.

[    7.810000] Kernel panic - not syncing: Fatal exception in interrupt

Commit 6fffb77c (USB: ohci-at91: fix PIO handling in relation with number of
ports) started setting unused pins to EINVAL. But this exposed a bug in the
ohci_hcd_at91_overcurrent_irq function where the gpio was used without being
checked to see if it is valid.

This patches fixed the issue by adding the gpio valid check.

Andi Kleen [Sat, 8 Sep 2012 19:47:59 +0000 (12:47 -0700)]
Kbuild: use normal compression settings for tar*-pkg

For large kernel configurations (like a distribution kernel)
targz-pkg takes a quite long time to just do the compression.
I clocked it at 15+mins for a SUSE kernel like config on a fast
system.  And tarxz and bzip2 are even slower.

The main reason is that the script that is doing the taring sets
the highest compression level (-9).  When I change it to just
use the defaults the gzip time for the same kernel goes down
to ~3 mins. I haven't tested xz and bzip, but I expect those
to be much faster too.

I'm not willing to wait that long for a small compression
gain. So just change the script to use the defaults.
