8 years agodrm/radeon: Avoid double gpu reset by adding a timeout on IB ring tests.
Matthew Dawson [Sun, 7 Feb 2016 21:51:12 +0000 (16:51 -0500)]
drm/radeon: Avoid double gpu reset by adding a timeout on IB ring tests.

When the radeon driver resets a gpu, it attempts to test whether all the
rings can successfully handle an IB.  If these rings fail to respond, the
process will wait forever.  Another gpu reset can't happen at this point,
as the current reset holds a lock required to do so.  Instead, make all
the IB tests run with a timeout, so the system can attempt to recover
in this case.

While this doesn't fix the underlying issue with card resets failing, it
gives the system a higher chance of recovering.  These timeouts have been
confirmed to help both a Tathi and Hawaii card recover after a gpu reset.

This also adds a new function, radeon_fence_wait_timeout, that behaves like
fence_wait_timeout.  It is used instead of fence_wait_timeout as it continues
to work during a reset.  radeon_fence_wait is changed to be implemented
using this function.

V2:
 - Changed the timeout to 1s, as the default 10s from radeon_wait_timeout was
too long.  A timeout of 100ms was tested and found to be too short.
 - Changed radeon_fence_wait_timeout to behave more like fence_wait_timeout.

gma500: clean up an excessive and confusing helper

This is a left over from the great clean ups in the past. It's confusing as
it returns an int, yet has one caller that never uses it. The caller already
has all the right private variables local so the entire function can be
replaced by a simple if call.

drm/gma500: remove helper function

We were getting build warning about:
drivers/gpu/drm/gma500/mdfld_dsi_output.c:407:2: warning: initialization
from incompatible pointer type

The callback to dpms was pointing to a helper function which had a
return type of void, whereas the callback should point to a function
which has a return type of int.
On closer look it turned out that we do not need the helper function
since if we call drm_helper_connector_dpms() directly, the first check
that drm_helper_connector_dpms() does is: if (mode == connector->dpms)

drm/imx: Unconfuse preclose logic

So this one is special, since it tries to prevent races when userspace
crashes simply by disabling the vblank machinery. Well except that imx
always has vblanks enabled, and the disable_vblank hook actually just
tries to cancel a pending pageflip. Without any locking whatsoever. Of
course this is wrong, since it'll result in the hw not actually
displaying what drm thinks is the current frontbuffer.

Well since the core takes care of the disappearing DRM fd now. So we
can nuke all this confused code without ill side-effects.

Someone else needs to audit the locking for ->newfb and
->page_flip_event and fix it up. Common approach is to reuse
dev->event_lock for this.

For those wondering where the drm_vblank_put went to: With the new
